Revolving Loan Program
Bangladeshi women are often seen as valueless as they don’t visibly contribute to family incomes when this is measured in terms of monetary value. However, when they are made members of the Revolving Loan Microcredit Programme they can earn their own income, continue to meet the needs of their children and families and become empowered and valued.
Nijera Shikhi has implemented the Revolving Loan Program since 2003 in the south west part of Bangladesh at Koloroa (Satkhira District), Abhoynagar and Monirampur (Jessore District). This is where poor people can access credit facilities without collateral in order to enable them to commence their own small businesses. Banker to the Poor, professor Muhammed Yunus has shown in his book of the same name, how important this is to enable the poor to escape the trap of poverty that they are in. Activities include tailoring, cloth manufacture, goat rearing, cow rearing, fattening and milk farming, poultry farming, pisciculture, grocery and other small businesses, agriculture, horticulture, rickshaw purchasing, bees and many other ideas. For more information on the efficacy of microcredit in reducing poverty in Bangladesh, see Books by Professor Muhammad Yunus, such as “Banker to the Poor” by Muhammad Yunus and visit the Grameen Bank website www.grameen-info.org. |
