Awareness Building program on Natural Calamities and Disaster Management

Bangladesh is situated in the angle of two peninsulas, of India and
Myanmar/Thailand.  This causes frequent huge natural calamities, such as tidal, bore, tornado, droughts, floods, earthquake and tsunamis.

The beneficiaries of this program are the women folk of the revolving loan
programs, their families and local people.

The program assistants and the branch managers arrange 10 meetings in each area and makes them aware of advance information about natural calamities, strategic preparation to face the calamities, taking shelter during the disaster and living safely after the calamity. In 2009 the storm Aila hit the Satkhira district and its adjacent areas. Many of the huts were blown down – relief aid was distributed by Nijera Shikhi, including clothes, and rice, lentils, salt, pressed rice, sweets and matches.

Victims were also assisted with short term, low interest loans to get them
back on their feet.
