Rev. John P Hastings School
The John P Hastings School is an urban PPE (Pre-Primary Education) school. The school runs in two shifts, the first shift for school based PPE and a class I
for 5-7 yr olds and a second shift for classes II, III and IV. The curriculum of the school based PPE is prepared by an Asoka fellow who is also a member of Nijera Shikhi. The government curriculum is also followed in the school so that the students can easily join in the main stream of primary education. Besides regular classes, every Thursday there are extra-curricular classes including learning of English rhymes, Bengali verses or poems, songs and drawing. It costs approximately £1500 to run JPH school per annum. Parents meetings are held every two to three months where various problems are discussed, including society and life orientated subjects such as child care and general health, cleanliness, nutrition, family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention. In addition, free medical treatment and nutritious food are provided by Nijera Shikhi with the help of RH Steps (an NGO) every three months. A doctor visits the students and parents and distributes free medicine where required. |
